The Schwinn Sabbatical and 25th Anniversary Tour
It seems like only yesterday that we were packing up the equipment required for conducting interviews during our "Schwinn Sabbatical and 25th Anniversary Tour!" We were scheduled to leave on our trip in only two days and we had no idea how to even turn on the camera! But, after a quick tutorial by our daughter, Lisa, off we went on the trip of a lifetime, visiting 13 countries on four continents in search of more "conscious leaders." At least that's what David said in his sabbatical proposal, and that's what we said when we asked our friends and colleagues who we should talk to in our travels. Their recommendations resulted in scheduling interviews with over three dozen managers and leaders from all over the world, and not one of them failed to live up to their reputation! Their stories are an inspiration to all who aspire to create work that is worthy of the human spirit.
The Book
During our interviews, every single leader we talked to - from the founders and directors of social nonprofits to the executives of multi-national corporations - talked to us about the need for their organizations to help create a future that works for everyone. They told us about their commitment to helping those they work with to become more highly conscious people who are not only capable of making their organizations more successful, but contributing to their communities and the larger society, as well. We began to see a pattern that resulted in The Transformative Workplace: Growing People, Purpose, Prosperity and Peace.
In the book, we:
- define what we mean by the transformative workplace;
- describe a framework for developing more conscious ways of being;
- share the stories of dozens of workplaces that are growing their people;
- provide evidence of multiple benefits to organizations; and
- offer ways of fostering transformation that can be applied right now.

What Others Are Saying About the Book
The Transformative Workplace deepens our understanding of the work we do by showing how it grows from the people we are, how the two are inextricably linked, and how honoring both heightens the contribution we make to the world we inherit. Carole and David Schwinn are the Lewis and Clark of this frontier where how we live our lives and what we do with them are one and the same.
—Mark Nepo, author of The Endless Practice and The Book of Awakening
Given the state of our world, it may seem that we are fixed in an unstoppable cycle of disintegration, yearning hopelessly for leaders who believe that the workplace can be an incubator of the soul and that each of us could be the steward for a new world. Thanks to Carole and David Schwinn, our passionate guides, we learn that such leaders do exist. The Transformative Workplace is your map to this compelling, alternative future.
--Peter F. Norlin, Ph.D., Principal, ChangeGuides, and former Executive Director, OD Network
“What is inspiring, different, and refreshing about the Schwinn's work is that they've put people at the center of their journey. We meet many inspiring and exemplary leaders, but after reading their stories, what I remember most about them is who they are, not what they did. For far too long, we've ignored the fact that the most powerful leadership skill is "Know Thyself"--the truth expressed in ancient Greece at the Temple of Delphi. Carole and David skillfully guide us into the perspectives and practices that create true self-awareness; from such awareness, transformation at all levels naturally occurs.”
--Dr. Margaret Wheatley, author of Leadership and the New Science and So Far From Home
